My choice was Jenny Holzer. She comes from a  fine art/ political perspective and  doesn’t even really use computers in her motion graphics work. Her work is definitely in the genre of Information Design - mainly it shows her and other people’s writings - that are in a public space to be accessible to many people to make people think. Her main tools are LED screens with writing scrolling across or projections on the sides of buildings. No Aftereffects for her. I believe she just likes to keep it uncomplicated and more conceptual. I know that I have seen her stuff in museums and stood and watched/read it for a long time and was thought provoked.

As for the 7 criteria of motion design, here we go:

1. Composition - Her composition is based on the space she is showing in - so she may have the led screens arranged in a certain formation - as in this video where she is working in a round building and the piece fits inside it and goes up into it.

2. Image - Is Text - either the dots making up letters of the LED screen or san serif text in the projections… I think a lot of the content of the writing actually creates the real image in the viewers mind. She keeps everything pretty basic.

3.Symbols - language symbols - words and letters

4.Time - scrolling - usually pretty slow to be readable

5. Sound - Not sure how much sound she is using - maybe some classical in the background. Maybe the sound is more complete with the viewers comments upon watching it.

6. Intent - Her intent is to make people think

7. Meaning - I am not sure what the video I put up means since it is in another language but she is pretty deep with the meaning stuff….

I like Shepard Fairey’s typeface choices. Bold, simple, and classic - They work great with his illustrations through the use of size, style and color.

Post a motion graphics piece to your Tumblr blog and critique the piece using the properties: Shape, Texture/Pattern, Color and Size as detailed in the notes below.

The motion graphics piece I have chosen for this week is the intro to the TV show Breaking Bad. This show is about a chemistry professor who goes into the methamphetamine business.

SHAPE - The main shape is the structure and components of the periodic table - mostly typography - At first I believe the letters are what make up the chemical compound of methamphetamine - and then layers of the periodic table appear and recede to the background - with two squares/compounds popping out - BR (for “Breaking) and BA (for BAD) and then there is the plume of smoke at the end - an abstract shape that moves across the screen contrasting with the other shapes moving backward.

TEXTURE/ PATTERN - The Pattern is the periodic table and the texture is the smoky chemical air leading us to believe that this guys reliable life pattern is fading away and less reliable forces are creeping into his life - symbolized by the chemical smoke.

COLOR - The color is very effective for the subject matter of this show - Green and yellow green - the color of toxic chemicals.

SIZE - Size is very effective here as well - with the different layers of the periodic table getting smaller and receding into the background - while the letters that are going to make up the Title and Created by, stay in the foreground to attract attention to the title and creator of the show.

300 End Title Sequence

No music.  The audio is composed of the sounds of battle along with mostly static visuals combined with dramatic camera angles zooming in and around - slicing swords, horse sounds, battle cries, yelps of pain, blood splattering, birds chirping. Silouettes that build upon each other to show the strength of the Roman army against a paint splattered backdrop. Lots of moving camera angles. Blood splatters definitely focused on with sound and audio going together for the most impact. The names of the cast and crew are in a handwritten bloody red over the silouettes and move with the characters. Colors are black and red over the sunset painted background.  Some changes in speed. Dramatic - Really effective!

Cool Motion Graphic (click here) →

Here is a cool motion graphic for Fuse TV by Blind productions .

It’s only 20 seconds long but it makes me more interested in checking out Fuse TV.

Mostly handdrawn characters and writing with some stopmotion photography and some video hands mixed in, all floating in space - like doodles on a piece of paper. I like how the video hands have a layer of dots over them.

This particular video zooms in on the Rapper but I have a feeling they have other spots that may zoom in on the other characters. Very fun style with upbeat music. Mostly black and white with some desaturated color thrown in.

2 Dimensional mixes with 3 dimensional when they zoom in and plug the guy’s head in. I guess the message is that the Fuse channel is fun and cool. Not overly slick.
